Civilopedia entry[]

Modernity refers to a particular time and mode of thought beginning in the 17th century and continuing into the early 20th. In very broad strokes, modernism posits that things, be they industrial lines or political practice, are reducible to basic elements and forces. Modernization, then, seeks to make those elements and forces move most efficiently, maximizing output and minimizing input. As such, it has gone hand-in-hand with scientific thought, industrialization, and the growth in size and scale of the economy. Politically, modern movements have run the gamut: representative democracies, fascist dictatorships, bureaucratic monarchies, and single-party Communist states are often all modern movements.

Modernity’s critics argue that in the reduction of life to a matter of input and expenditure, efficiency and rationality, other, more essential qualities are lost – these critics include the Romantic movement in art and literature as well as social critics such as Max Weber, who described modernity as the “iron cage,” one that traps thought and activity both, and from which there is no escape.
