Mods, or modifications, to the free game C-evo take a number of forms.
In-game modifications[]
Built into the game itself are ways to vary aspects of it. For example, the player can:
- select any of many possible levels of difficulty
- select the size and land percentage of the map
- use a selection of the "Manipulations", which are a bit like cheating but affect all nations equally and can radically alter the play.
Website files[]
The C-evo website has a page devoted to downloadable files created by fans or by the original creator of the game. Some are maps, some are tribes, some are AIs, and there are over a dozen "localizations" that overwrite text with a different language.
Forks[]
Forks of the software are a kind of mod. With the apparent stalling of publishable development of the original game since 2013, fork development is most welcome. See:
- C-evo: New Horizons - playable (Windows and Linux) fork on Lazarus, by chronoscz <robie @ centrum.cz>; improved several times until at least September 2025
- C-evo Distant Horizon - Peter Blackman's playable (Windows and Linux) fork of New Horizons; improved several times until at least September 2025
