Civilopedia entry[]
Monasteries in the medieval and Early Modern periods were spaces of respite from the world at large. Monks and nuns laid aside their former lives to dedicate themselves to spiritual pursuits. This was a journey of the mind, not only through engagement with sacred doctrine but other academic topics. Monasteries were often the site of manuscript production, as their inhabitants were literate (unusual for the times) and inquisitive, well-suited to copying and composing religious texts – and eventually secular ones. The creation of manuscripts required peace, quiet, a lot of time, and money for materials. Monasteries provided these resources, enabling their residents to become theologians, historians, literary authors, and scientists.
