Civilopedia entry[]

The prevailing winds over the Indian Ocean experience yearly shifts. In the summer, when the land is hot and the sea is cool, winds blow from the southwest ocean, bringing moist air and rainfall to the subcontinent and Southeast Asia. In the winter, cooler air blows down from Mongolia, though this path is largely blocked by the Himalayas. It is not an overstatement to say that everything depends on the monsoon in this part of the world – rains bring life-giving water to crops, power hydroelectric dams, and renew the parched land for another season. Unsurprisingly, in many South and Southeast Asian countries, the New Year begins at the monsoon, not on a shift in the sun that is barely perceptible in equatorial climates.

The Chola exploited these winds for travel. A ship could voyage east at one time of the year buoyed by the winds, and west a half of a year later.
