Civilopedia entry[]
Mortars were as simple as they were deadly. Unlike the rifled howitzer or other artillery, a mortar launched a bomb (stabilized with fins) in a high parabola toward a nearby target. Their accuracy depended on the calculation of trajectory, winds, and other battlefield conditions. Mortars primarily served to keep a besieged city in a constant state of fear or to rain destruction on a military camp. Artillery often accompanied a larger force, but mortars could be fired by a small squad and moved before a target retaliated.
The concept has been used for centuries, most notably in medieval Korea. Since World War I, light hand-carried mortars or larger mechanized mortars have been deployed by both regular and irregular troops. In that conflict, mortars were especially feared, as shells could drop into trenches that were otherwise immune from line-of-sight rifle fire.
