Civilopedia entry[]
A key duty of ancient Egypt’s rulers was to prepare for their inevitable death. In addition to their tombs, they built mortuary temples to ensure that their royal ka, or spirit, would be cared for after departing for the afterlife. These structures featured shrines to the gods; a chapel with a false door, allowing the dead to access the realm of the living; an offering table for visitors’ dedications; and storerooms for goods devoted to the deceased. Mortuary temples were staffed by priests who performed daily rites, allowing the ruler to perpetually maintain their cult.
During the Old, Middle, and early New Kingdoms, temples were typically attached to the pyramid or burial chamber where the royal was interred. The most famous of these is the Temple of Hatshepsut, a monumental structure commemorating her achievements, built to overshadow the Temple of Mentuhotep II next door. Although the rise of rock-cut tombs later prevented the construction of mortuary temples adjacent to the tombs themselves, they continued to be built a short distance away, carrying on centuries of tradition and reverence for those long gone.
