Civilopedia entry[]
The mosque is the central place of Muslim worship. Initial incarnations were likely open-air spaces designated for prayer in the earliest days of Islam during the seventh century AD. Over time, mosques evolved into structures with distinctive architectural features to facilitate religious use. The mihrab is a niche in the wall, often highly decorated, and indicates the direction of Mecca so worshippers can orient themselves correctly in prayer. Minarets, tall thin towers adjacent to the mosque, are used by the muezzin to issue the call to prayer to the surrounding population five times a day. Beyond spiritual activities, mosques represent the heart of a Muslim community, providing a space not only for religious practice but also for education and social gathering.
