Civilopedia entry[]
High ground was an advantage for castles, but sometimes it had to be manufactured. Medieval Europeans molded the earth to create mottes, hills with artificially steep sides and a flat top. Mottes could be formed by either whittling down an existing hill or by building one from the soil, leaving a defensive ditch around the base of the structure that could be filled with water (or pointed logs) to create a moat. These slopes were extremely difficult for attackers to scale and were cheap to construct, requiring no specialized knowledge. As such, they were a quick and easy way of establishing a defensive advantage, even in a flat landscape.
The keep, the central fortification of the castle complex, sat on top of the motte. Small keeps might hold a small garrison, while larger ones contained whole households, with cellars below stocked with supplies and chambers above for the noble family and their staff and guards.
