Civilopedia entry[]
Situated at the heart of the Himalayas, Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. Called Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan, the mountain has been long held as sacred among local populations. “Everest” comes from Sir George Everest, whose name, contrary to popular pronunciation, was pronounced “EEV-rest.”
Mount Everest was measured as the world’s tallest peak in 1852, and was first summitted in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay; the possible success of the 1924 attempt by George Mallory and Andrew Irvine remains famously unsolved. Today the mountain is a popular destination for climbers and tourists alike, leading to problems of waste and dangerous overcrowding at the summit.
Trivia[]
- Mount Everest's wonder quote comes from Nepalese Sherpa and mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two people, alongside Edmund Hillary, to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May, 1953, as part of the 1953 British Mount Everest expedition.
