The monsoon is a vital piece of Khmer life and culture. The rains form when warm air from the Indian Ocean sweeps toward the Himalayas. Bunched against the massive mountains, the air rises, water condenses, and rivers flood. We associate the monsoon with South Asia, but Southeast Asia is fed by these seasonal winds. The Mekong River, which forms the heart of Cambodia, originates in the Tibetan plateau. Floods on the Mekong can raise the water 30 feet or more. Near present-day Phnom Penh, this causes the great river to flow backward, filling the Tonle Sap lake and the massive baray reservoirs built near Angkor Wat.
The regular arrival of rain and floods was a sign of the continuance of life, and the Khmer saw the constant renewal of the land as the purview of Khmer kings.
