Civilopedia entry[]
The mwami (plural baami) was a chief in Baganda society. Traditionally, they were local administrators. The mwami’s duties included organizing labor for agriculture or building projects, leading religious rituals, and resolving issues within his community. These tasks were performed in exchange for tribute, forming strong social bonds based on reciprocity. While baami had individual connections anchoring them to specific ancestral sites, their territory was largely dictated by where their population lived. If their people moved or migrated, the mwami’s control over the land moved with them. People could switch their allegiance to another mwami at any time, either by relocating or forming a relationship with a new chief.
