Civilopedia entry[]
Defining and categorizing religion – especially early religious beliefs – is difficult. How do we separate religion from culture, from politics, from ways of life? Many religious beliefs, including earlier versions of modern-day global religions, dealt with supernatural forces, be they spirits, gods, or simply a vital essence or way of being that ran through the cosmos. Spirits could appear as the heart of a neighborhood, offering positions from which to comment on present-day situations, or providing a means of distinguishing one group of people from another. The reverent reserve that many feel in the presence of the divine is absent from smaller-scale societies, and visitors may feel off-put by the familiarity, or even irreverence, with which divine figures are greeted.
“Mysticism” in its formal definition implies a transcendent state of communion with the divine – one imagines states of trance, possession, or religious contemplation. It is the first step in positing a removal of the divine from the world – a move from immanence to transcendence. No longer do gods visit on Tuesdays to consult with interested believers; instead a deity (or dharma) requires personal privation and contemplation to access.
