Natural disasters are random events that occur around specific terrain features and conditions in Civilization VII and its expansions. They damage Buildings Buildings, Improvements Improvements and Units Units but can also fertilize affected land, temporarily boosting its yields.

Mechanics[]

Natural disasters are a recurring mechanic first introduced in Civilization VI: Gathering Storm. When a disaster occurs, players are notified by a warning on the side of the screen, and sometimes a short cinematic will play if the event spawns nearby.

Disasters can cause a significant degree of destruction. Each affected tile will be damaged: Buildings Buildings and Improvements Improvements must be repaired, and any Units Units present will take damage. The only exception is Wonders Wonders, which cannot be destroyed by anything except nuclear weapons.

At the same time, Rural Tiles Rural Tiles hit by disasters are usually fertilized, increasing their Food Food and Production Production yields for a certain period. Natural disasters are therefore both harmful and beneficial, depending on when and where they strike.

Types of disasters[]

There are three primary categories of natural disasters, each with unique mechanics:

Flood[]

Floods can occur at any time on Floodplains near Rivers or Coast. They are single-turn events that damage all affected infrastructure and Units on those tiles.

While some special infrastructure (such as Wonders) may mitigate their effects, floods currently do not have a reliable counter equivalent to Dams in Civilization VI.

Volcanic Eruption[]

Volcanic Eruptions occur on active Volcanoes. When a Volcano is active, fire or smoke can be seen above it, and each turn there is a chance it will erupt. An eruption damages and fertilizes all adjacent tiles.

Most Volcanoes erupt once during an active phase, after which they become dormant until reactivated.

Storm[]

Storms are the only disaster type that can last multiple turns. They form randomly, then move across the map until they eventually dissipate.

Each turn they move, storms damage all tiles, Improvements, and Units beneath them, making them highly destructive and difficult to anticipate.

List of storms[]

Storms can spawn in nearly any region, but they take different forms depending on the terrain or biome:
