Civilopedia entry[]

What exists in the world? The discipline of natural history grew out of an attempt to understand the world outside of human constructions – literature, politics, etc. – and outside of the divine. Here, it seeks to understand nature in all its forms (ecology, geology), and how nature shapes human lives.

The discipline is often traced back to Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis Historia: 37 books devoted to everything from the stars to the rocks, from folk lives to horticulture. This attempt to catalog nature into a holistic image is not limited to Western works – Li Shizen’s Ming-era Bencao Gangmu is a similar attempt to chart the natural world, as do Yaqut al-Hamawi’s 12th-century works. Nor is it limited to the medieval period: later figures such as Carl Linnaeus, Alexander Von Humboldt, and Charles Darwin likewise sought out the underpinnings of the natural world.

Natural history today is scattered across academic disciplines, including ecology, anthropology, geology and the like, but to call oneself a natural historian implies a devotion to the holistic – to both the function and artistry of nature.
