A Natural Wonder is a unique terrain feature in Civilization VII and its expansions. It confers benefits to civilizations that discover it or settle near it.
In contrast to Wonders,
Natural Wonders are not constructed by players but are instead placed on the map upon starting a new game. Three natural wonders are placed on a Tiny map, with one added for each increase in map size (to a maximum of five on a Standard map).
Mechanics[]
A Natural Wonder consists of one to four tiles and can be either passable or impassable. They can take the form of various terrain features, including Mountains, Wet tiles, or even Volcanoes. For this reason, each
Natural Wonder will always be found in the same biome.
Natural Wonder tiles provides a unique set of yields that can be collected by assigning
Citizens to work the tile, similar to how
Improvements are utilized after a normal growth event. These base yields increase with each passing Age — by +50% in the Exploration Age and +100% in the Modern Age.
In addition to their base yields, Natural Wonders can provide bonus yields to adjacent tiles, multiple tiles within the
Settlement they are located in, or even grant bonuses to the entire civilization. Only one tile needs to be acquired by your
Settlement to receive the bonus, meaning that a multi-tile
Natural Wonder can benefit multiple
Settlements if its tiles are shared.
Furthermore, Natural Wonders offer adjacency bonuses to nearby culture and happiness
Buildings, making them highly valuable for cultural gain. This effect is especially potent when the
Natural Wonder is also a Mountain tile, as this will double the adjacency bonus to these buildings, making them even more powerful.
However, Natural Wonder tiles cannot be modified — buildings, unique
Improvements, and wonders cannot be constructed on top of them. This means that while they offer great benefits, their placement may sometimes limit expansion or development options within a City's borders.
Synergies and bonuses[]
Certain leaders, civilizations, and other game mechanics can enhance the value of Natural Wonders by increasing their yields or providing additional benefits when interacting with them:
- Isabella gains a significant amount of
Gold upon discovering a
Natural Wonder (300
Gold by default, 600
Gold if the wonder is in Distant Lands). Additionally,
Natural Wonder tiles within her
Settlements will have their yields doubled.
Spawn rate[]
Not all Natural Wonders appear with the same frequency in every game, as many have specific spawn conditions beyond terrain requirements that influence their chances of spawning. As a result, some wonders are significantly rarer than others, making them a unique sight when they do appear.
Below is a rough estimate of Natural Wonder appearance rates based on 50 standard map generations, with five wonders per map:
- Common (~50%) - These wonders frequently appear in most games due to their flexible spawn conditions.
- Rare (~5%) - These wonders have the most restrictive spawn and terrain requirements and are among the least likely to appear.
- Uncommon (~25%) - All other wonders that are not listed. Each of them has relatively specific terrain requirements, making them appear less often.
The spawn rate may vary slightly depending on whether all DLC Natural Wonders are enabled.
Bugs[]
Although most Natural Wonders are normally impassable, packed Commanders are sometimes able to move over or even end their turns on impassable
Natural Wonders that are not mountains. This is obviously unintended, as stationing a Commander and troops there renders them impervious to melee attacks.
