Niter, or saltpeter, is potassium nitrate, a widely abundant salt found in caves, especially in arid places. Its nitrogen content makes it valuable as fertilizer. But it has another popular use: when mixed with sulfur and charcoal, it makes gunpowder. Song Dynasty China (960-1279 CE) was the first place to make use of black powder, constructing powerful bombs, fire arrows, and incendiary devices (as well as fireworks). The process soon caught on and spread elsewhere. By the late 1200s, early cannons were being used against (and later by) the Mongols in the Middle East. By the 1300s, the Turks were experimenting with “fire-lances”: guns. The rest is history; as Mao Zedong wrote, political power comes from the barrel of a gun.
