Civilopedia entry[]

The archetypal astronomical observatory is a large metal dome with a telescope peeking out, something like the Sphinx Observatory in Switzerland. But imagine observatories centuries before – quiet, still platforms from which the sky can be analyzed, perhaps using reference markers to date astronomical movements (i.e. Venus rose from this stone, etc.). Such sites were important for astronomy, astrology, mathematics, and navigation, and they often fused religious and scientific understandings. We find these structures in Beijing, Delhi, the Mayan city of Caracol, and elsewhere. As optical technology expanded, observatories seized upon the ability to use bigger and more accurate lenses. By the 17th century onward, many major European nations built detailed observatories to better understand the heavens.
