Civilopedia entry[]

The model of the individual farmer predominated in Western Europe. But in Russia, the obshchina was a type of long-established collective farm (not to be confused with later Communist collective farms). At obshchiny, individuals held and farmed their own plots. However, plots could not be transferred without the approval of the collective, and if the situation became unbalanced, the collective could re-apportion the land as needed. In this way, peasants in the obschchina were sheltered from the hazards of everyday catastrophe: a death in the community, the establishment of a new household, etc. These communities were not entirely self-governing until the abolishment of serfdom; lords and wealthy landowners still existed, but they retained some degree of (collective) autonomy away from the forces of state and capital. Slavophiles – Russians who saw value in Russia’s Slavic roots rather than in the emulation of European norms – saw something noble in the obschchina. In later years, they were upheld as a proto-Communist formation by those who sought to transform the Russian economy.
