Civilopedia entry[]
Vocal arts were highly valued in ancient Greece, and the right venue was crucial for the demonstration of a performer’s skills. Large productions took place in the open-air theater, but the size and acoustics of these structures were not always ideal for more modest shows. In 435 BC, Pericles built a smaller stage as a rehearsal space next to the Theater of Dionysus in Athens. This odeon, covered by a roof and decorated with the remains of Persian ships destroyed in the recent war, began a movement toward cozier spaces for more intellectually driven performances of poets, musicians, and orators. The separation of odeons from theaters created a distinction between levels of entertainment, offering a space for these art forms to thrive for the enjoyment of educated audiences.
