Civilopedia entry[]
More than “family,” ohana represents a concept of community, a mutual interdependence. The word appears to be new to the Hawaiian dictionary; it doesn't appear in very old texts and may have developed as an outsider's characterization of the “Hawaiian family” or as an assertion of unity in the face of Hawaiian disruptions of the 19th and 20th centuries. During this time, waves of labor immigration incorporated new Asian residents into the Hawaiian fold, while a white American minority with powerful corporate connections slowly increased its control over the island.
