Civilopedia entry[]
The word “museum” often conjures images of halls filled with treasures from the past. But museums are not always indoors; sometimes outdoor exhibits are the best way to invite the public to explore history. Open-air museums first emerged in Scandinavia as an attempt to preserve old ways of life that were quickly disappearing in the face of industrial modernity. The benchmark for these museums was Sweden’s Skansen. Historic buildings from around the country were dismantled, packed up, and shipped to Stockholm, where they were reassembled in a park, accompanied by interactive exhibits demonstrating traditional activities like crafts and folk dancing. The Skansen model spread widely to other nations looking to capture their past before it vanished. Today the open-air museum model has expanded to include historic buildings and activities as well as sculpture gardens and sprawling sites, archaeological or otherwise.
