Satellitelaunch1 (CivBE)

Operation

Launch and Orbital Coverage

Orbital units can be built from cities or occasionally found by Explorers. An orbital unit must be launched into the orbital layer before it takes effect.

Each city has an Orbital Coverage range within which its colony may launch orbital units:

  • Base Orbital Coverage range is 4.
  • The Launch Complex and Neoplanetarium buildings increase Orbital Coverage by 3 each.
  • The Stellar Codex wonder increases Orbital Coverage by 4.
  • Some buildings have a quest option to increase Orbital Coverage:

The launch site does not matter; any city may launch into the Orbital Coverage range of any other city of the same colony. Each orbital unit has an area of effect. Orbital units cannot be placed such that its area of effect overlaps with that of an existing orbital unit.

Once launched, orbital units cannot be moved.

De-orbiting

Orbital units can be de-orbited (destroyed) in a few ways:

  • Upon reaching the end of its duration, an orbital unit will de-orbit automatically.
  • Orbital units may be shot down by cities or Missile Rovers.
  • Orbital units may be manually de-orbited.

Upon de-orbiting, satellites crash into the planet's surface, leaving a Crashed Satellite. An Explorer can investigate the wreck.

Rocktopus

The Rocktopus, a Harmony Harmony unique unit, is an orbital unit with special mechanics. The option to de-orbit manually is offered as a perk after Level 16 Harmony Harmony is reached.
