Civilopedia entry[]
Calling people to go forth and kill is a serious matter. The foundation of military discipline was one key principle of this process, but this was a simple matter of training recruits correctly. To maintain a standing, professional army – soldiers who never stood down, who remained soldiers for life – was quite another thing. This led to a class of professional soldiers, unmatched by neighboring countries whose troops believed they were farmers or artisans first, and warriors second. This shift was transformative in Rome, especially, as these soldiers who had little academic training became powerful political players in their own right. Julius Caesar made a bet on the army over the Senate and won. Later Roman generals would make a similar gamble, at times successfully seizing power from the increasingly weak legislature in what would become the template for every successive military coup d’état.
