Civilopedia entry[]
Academic institutions provide society with the space and time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. Societies that do not invest in education quickly repeat the errors of their predecessors. Although Oxford is not the oldest university in the world (the University of Bologna has been in continuous operation longer), it has been teaching students for over a thousand years, since its founding circa 1096. The university remains one of the most prestigious institutions for higher education today and has the largest academic press and library in the world (counting its digital assets). After its founding, Oxford grew thanks to conflicts between Europe and England, drawing in students who had been forbidden from studying abroad. In 1878, it started admitting women, and in recent years has hosted and educated over 70 Nobel laureates and 50 world leaders.
Trivia[]
- The Oxford University's wonder quotes comes from an 1888 letter by Irish poet, dramatist and Nobel Prize in Literature winner W. B. Yeats to his friend and fellow writer Katharine Tynan.
