Civilopedia entry[]
What is paradise? In the dry Iranian plateau, a walled garden with cool streams and groves of shady trees would have been a welcome respite from the heat. Mesopotamian rulers often built gardens in their palaces as otherworldly landscapes, at times re-creating the flora of the lands they had conquered. This tradition was taken into Persia, and the pairidaeza, or paradise, became a marker of luxury. These were not simply horticultural exhibitions. In addition to the exotic plants in the pairidaeza, hydroengineering technology moved water into artificial streams, fountains, waterfalls, and canals – irrigation for more than agriculture, for a re-creation of Eden (or its Zoroastrian equivalent).
