Civilopedia Entry[]

Nations need museums. According to political scientist Benedict Anderson, modern nationhood was nearly inevitable, the result of a grand ethnic narrative (i.e. “the Swedish people”) or a culmination of ideological principles (i.e. “liberty” in the American context). Art plays a significant role in this process, both in how it records history and in how it gives form to the imagination of a nation.

The Palacio des Bellas Artes is Mexico’s cultural center. Built on the foundations of a church – which in turn was built on the foundations of an Aztec site – the current building was commissioned in 1904 to celebrate Mexican independence, but its Art Nouveau stylings were not completed until 1934. It is the nation’s most prestigious place for hosting theatrical performances and contains works celebrating Mexico’s marriage of indigenous and Spanish customs.

Trivia[]

  • The Palacio de Bellas Artes' wonder quote comes from the diary of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, written in the hospital in August, 1953 after her right leg had to be amputated due to gangrene.
