The Ottoman title of “pasha” corresponds roughly to knighthood in the courts of European powers at the time. It was bestowed directly by the Sultan in the Ottoman Empire, and could be made hereditary in cases of exceptional service. The title of pasha is often accorded to important individuals, such as Ibrahim Pasha, the Grand Vizier of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
