Civilopedia entry[]
A pavilion (ting in Chinese, chahartaq in Persian, and shala in Sanskrit) generally refers to an open structure designed for festivals, public assemblies, or general relaxation. The concept is old as pavilions were used widely during the Zhou Dynasty and formed a central part of Zoroastrian fire temples in the pre-Islamic period. In the West, these structures were often decorative, placed within a royal complex or fairground, and intended as places where one could relax and take in the sights. Famous pavilions include the Siamese summer palace at Bang Pa-in, the pavilions at Topkapı Palace in Istanbul, and the Forbidden City.
