Civilopedia entry[]
With the fall of Napoleon, Britain ruled the waves. In the century that followed, no other power gained significant advantage over the British when it came to sea routes, and as the era of high colonialism was fully in sway, this meant all would-be intercontinental empires were subject to British sea power. The name given to this era, Pax Britannica, reflects similar conditions elsewhere, when a single empire controls a network of trade and communication, fostering peace…albeit under a single ordered rule.
This domination lasted until the end of the 19th century, when the rise of the United States, Japan, and Germany set up new challengers to the British, and ultimately fell apart in the 20th century.
