Pearls are formed out of annoyance. When a bivalve mollusk, such as an oyster or river mussel, finds an irritant (often a parasite) that it cannot expel, it coats the grain with layer upon layer of calcite, attempting to make it easier to live with. Therefore these highly prized jewels are essentially parasites wrapped in mollusk excretion. Ancient pearls were found by divers, most notably in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea (though Britain had its own source in river mussels), and were sought after by nobility around the world. The Chinese associated pearls with the mythic power of dragons and hunted for them extensively in Southeast Asia.
