Strategy[]
Making a return in Civilization VII, Petra can significantly boost the yields of a desert
City. While it does not provide any direct bonuses to
Food, flat desert terrain in Civilizaton VII is significantly stronger than in previous entries. There are some factors to consider when building and interpreting the benefits of the
Wonder.
Because of these mechanics, Petra is especially strong in
Cities with many desert Mines, as these tiles offer valuable
Production yields and are less likely to be replaced by
Buildings. Essentially, Petra acts as an enhanced
Warehouse Building for these Mines by granting additional
Gold and
Production, making them even more efficient. The wonder also pairs well with desert
Cities featuring navigable rivers and Fishing Boats, for the same reason that they will not often be overbuilt. Combined with the Pyramids, which also boost yields on navigable river tiles, these
Cities can become highly productive.
Even if these ideal conditions don’t apply, Petra remains a strong choice for any desert
City. While flat desert tiles may eventually be covered with infrastructure, reducing Petra's long-term impact, its early-game
Gold and
Production boost can be significant. Additionally, the adjacency bonus of wonders makes any wonder a valuable asset, ensuring that prioritizing Petra is rarely a bad decision when given the opportunity.
Civilopedia entry[]
Arabia is often associated with Islam, but Arabs had a long history in the area before the rise of the Prophet. One example is the Nabataean civilization, an Aramaic-speaking population living in present-day Jordan. Their city of Raqmu, now Petra, is a marvel of stonecutting – an entire city carved from rock that earned the epithet “city of rose.” Its most notable structure is the Al-Khazneh, the so-called treasury building, which was a mausoleum to a Nabatean king.
The Nabataeans created a city where life flourished – even in the desert. They built channels where water flowed and created a hidden oasis in the middle of desolation. Today the monument remains a symbol of Jordan and one of New Seven Wonders of the World.
Trivia[]
- Petra's wonder quote comes from medieval Arab historian and sociologist Ibn Khaldun's book, the Muqaddimah, which is considered to be one of the first works dealing with sociology, demography and cultural history.
