Civilopedia entry[]
A phalanx was a terrifying military formation – for those facing it and those within it. Greek spearmen, or hoplites, were arranged in a formation with their long spears bristling forward before commencing a charge from which it was nearly impossible to escape unscathed. The phalanx was designed to combat every army's most devastating enemy: morale. It seems only natural to turn aside in the face of enemies who aim to kill you. However, those locked inside the shafts of their compatriots’ spears were thrust forward in an embrace that only ended with the death of their enemy – or their own. The weakness of the phalanx was its rigidity – it was highly effective on open terrain where two formations could square off, but the phalanx was stitched together with wood and bronze, so soldiers had difficulty adjusting to attacks from odd angles. As the Romans discovered, attacks from the side or back were devastating.
