Civilopedia entry[]
We are caught between our public and our private selves – as Claude Levi-Strauss writes, that aspect of ourselves that is perceived by another is both inaccessible to us and the basis for social life at the same time. This social self asks us to care for our kin, to fulfill our role vis-à-vis the state or other social organizations, and to be a part of a spiritual community. Piety, from the Latin “dutiful,” is at the core of this concept. For Confucians, filial piety – devotion to family and community – is one of the key virtues, whereas in more mystical religions piety may ask one to leave family and community in exchange for devotion to the divine (i.e. holy men, monks, and other mendicants). The development and richness of religious devotion in medieval times was diverse, from Hindu rishi who left civilized life to live in poverty in the mountains, to Christian saints who walled themselves in cellars voluntarily with only a small opening to provide air and nourishment. A common thread between these measures is an orientation toward something greater than our individual needs, and a willingness to sacrifice the self for this purpose.
