The pike square is a wall of pointed steel, affixed to staves 20 feet long. The intent was to keep the enemy far away while your weapon remained close. Pikes differ from spears in that they require two hands to hold. They grew longer throughout the later Middle Ages as steel improved and better wood was used for their shafts. The pikeman's weakness is obvious – the weapon was unwieldy, and it became useless in close quarters. Even so, pikes were a mainstay of infantry until firearms rendered them obsolete.
