The Plague Doctor is Medieval Era civilian unit from The Black Death, a scenario in Civilization VI: Gathering Storm. It can shorten the plague's duration on plague-stricken tiles and restore Loyalty to cities.

  • Attributes:
    • Has 2 charges (3 with Studia Generalia).
    • Can only be trained after the plague breaks out for the first time.
  • Abilities:
    • Minister to the Sick (consumes 1 charge; shortens the plague's duration on plague-stricken tiles)
    • Pacify City (consumes 1 charge; restores Loyalty to cities)

Strategy[]

In The Black Death, the Plague Doctor is an extremely important unit for your civilization. Minister to the Sick is best used on your City Center and districts to allow you to build up your cities during an outbreak. Pacify City is less needed than Minister to the Sick, but can be useful if you have a city with decreasing Loyalty. When playing as the Holy Roman Empire, Castile, or France make usage of Plague Doctors one of your top priorities. When playing as England Plague Doctors, while still useful, are less impervious thanks to their unique Coerce command.

Civilopedia entry[]

One of the most striking figures of the Black Death is the plague doctor, with his macabre beak-shaped mask, long robes, and staff. The tip of the beak mask would contain a sachet of aromatic herbs (the sweet smell was erroneously thought to repel the plague). A plague doctor would be called in when a patient (or dead body) was suspected of contracting the plague. He would use his stick or staff to search the patient without touching them in order to certify the case or clear the patient.
