The plaza was the center of Spanish government and society. These large open squares drew together the administrative buildings of a town or city, including the casa consistorial, the law court, and trade buildings of the Casa de Contratación, as well as the local church or cathedral. Because of its size and prominent location, the plaza was a key space for communal assemblies, operating as a site for social gatherings and celebrations as well as military parades. It was a consistent element of Spanish urban planning, so much so that it was exported to settlements around the world during Spain’s era of expansion and colonization.
