Civilopedia entry[]

Philosophy in its classical sense combined natural science, rhetoric, theology, and the like – in essence, everything. The notion was that there was an underlying unity to the world. But as the sciences continued their trajectories, the bodies of knowledge differentiated themselves – the question of governance, the notion of lawfulness, legitimacy, and authority became the purview of political theory. Names in modern political theory include John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Karl Marx, and John Stuart Mill, among others. What is a just society, and how do we build one? What is conservative, and what is liberal? What is authoritarian, and what is libertarian? These philosophies are governed by political theory, as are the particular ideologies within them. Political theory helps create a common language for governance and makes comparative politics easier.
