Polotsk was the dominant Slavic power in the area of modern Belarus from the 10th to 12th Centuries. However in the 13th Century it became a vassal of the Lithuanian princes and started to fade in importance. Two battles were fought near Polotsk during Napoleon's 1812 invasion of Russia.
