Civilopedia entry[]
Coastal cities require ports. Historically, transporting goods by water was often easier and faster than by land, but necessitated a sheltered place within deep water where large ocean-going ships could safely dock. These ports were installations where heavy ships could be fastened to a pier and unloaded by a team of stevedores. In addition, ports could contain areas for repair and refueling (for coal and oil-fueled ships). In this way, ports are in sync with land-based infrastructures such as rail and other distribution networks – ideally, a successful port is not a stop but a continuation of the flow of goods and people.
