Civilopedia entry[]
“Potkop” is a Natchez term for “mountain” or “mound.” Here it refers to the mounds raised by the Mississippian people, although they would have called it something else (they were likely Siouan speakers, and the Natchez language is an isolate). Nonetheless, the Natchez were building mounds they called potkop when they encountered Europeans in the 17th century.
The Mississippian potkop was a flat-topped structure made of packed earth, topped by a temple, storage buildings, or important homes and other central buildings. They were often used over successive generations, though Mississippian cities regularly went through cycles of growth and dissolution. The mounds are the most significant architectural aspect of their society that survives to the present.
