The Potkop is a unique Tile Improvement of the Mississippian civilization in Civilization VII. It must be built on a Flat tile.
Strategy[]
The Potkop is rarely worth placing. Tiles adjacent to many Resources are usually better suited for
Science or
Production
Buildings, which are among the most important infrastructure to prioritize.
That said, there are a few situations where placing a Potkop can be worth considering:
- The settlement has an abundance of
Resource tiles, and there's a valid Potkop location that doesn't compete with
Science or
Production buildings.
- The settlement is a strong candidate for a high-quality Farming
Town, and you have
Gold to spare.
- The end of the Age is approaching, and there's nothing else left to place — potentially preparing for a strong Serpent Mount
Wonder.
Overall, while the Gold bonus is very minor, the
Food bonus can be decent in some cases. Still, the Potkop is almost never a high-priority
Improvement.
Civilopedia entry[]
“Potkop” is a Natchez term for “mountain” or “mound.” Here it refers to the mounds raised by the Mississippian people, although they would have called it something else (they were likely Siouan speakers, and the Natchez language is an isolate). Nonetheless, the Natchez were building mounds they called potkop when they encountered Europeans in the 17th century.
The Mississippian potkop was a flat-topped structure made of packed earth, topped by a temple, storage buildings, or important homes and other central buildings. They were often used over successive generations, though Mississippian cities regularly went through cycles of growth and dissolution. The mounds are the most significant architectural aspect of their society that survives to the present.
