Press Gangs is a Military Policy Card in Civilization VI.
Strategy[]
Press Gangs replaces Maritime Industries as a policy that expedites the production of naval units. It's particularly beneficial when playing as the Portuguese (whose Nau replaces the Caravel), the Dutch (whose De Zeven Provinciƫn replaces the Frigate), the English (whose Sea Dog replaces the Privateer), or the Brazilians (whose Minas Geraes becomes available in the Industrial Era), or for building a massive navy after constructing the Venetian Arsenal.
Civilopedia entry[]
Impressment was the practice of ārecruitingā men into the navy by force (with or usually without notice). Navies of several civilizations used press gangs (armed groups who wandered about and did the āimpressingā), but the most well-known was the Royal British Navy, who began using it during wartime in 1664 AD and continued until the Napoleonic Wars. Although the practice fell into disuse after 1814 (impressed sailors did not necessarily make good sailors), it wasnāt outlawed in Great Britain until 1835. Despite lurid tales, press gangs rarely operated outside ports and rarely took anyone but seafarers, longshoremen, and fishermen ā anyone not accustomed to the sea tended to die too quickly.
