Civilopedia entry[]
On January 24, 1848, gold was discovered in Coloma, California. Over the following years, over 300,000 people raced to the Pacific Coast in the hopes of pulling immense wealth from the earth. These Gold Rush prospectors largely relied on panning to uncover flakes and nuggets that were carried out of their original deposits by streams and rivers. More ambitious prospectors diverted these waters to search the beds directly or dug shafts into the banks looking for paydirt.
Life as a prospector was far from easy. The work was physically taxing, often involving over 12 hours of back-breaking labor each day. Mining camps were remote and typically lacked sanitation and proper housing, allowing disease to run rampant. Due to the money at stake, trust was hard to come by, and violence was common in these temporary communities.
The allure of gold ultimately outlasted its prevalence. Early prospectors hauled away much of the easily found metal, and as more and more people crowded the rivers and mountains, many left empty-handed. The immense influx of migrants catalyzed the exponential growth of nearby cities and allowed California to quickly establish itself as the 31st state in the U.S. in 1850.
