Civilopedia entry[]

Before the Aztecs built their empire, another civilization flourished within modern-day Mexico. Teotihuacan served as a blueprint for the majesty of the Maya (who were contemporaries) and the Aztecs (who came much later). Teotihuacan's societal influence on art and trade was so strong that some scholars speculate that its decline, rather than environmental factors, led to the decline of the Maya. Teotihuacan civilization appears to have collapsed from within, likely due to social revolt and unrest. Still, their legacy remains.

The Aztecs gave the great Pyramid of the Sun its name – its Teotihuacan moniker has been lost to time. The space houses elaborate carvings of jaguars and serpents. But during its heyday, around 200 CE, its highest point also contained a temple, rising nearly 250 feet above the Mexican dryland. Even in ruins, it remains impressive.
