Civilopedia entry[]
A galley was an oar-powered ship – a line of men would man each oar and propel the ship forward (and could seize a weapon should an enemy board). But what is better than a row of oars? More rows. The quadrireme had four rows of oars (two per side), doubling its speed and maneuverability, and allowing for crushing ramming attacks. This also doubled its crew of potential fighters (a career rowing likely made them extremely fit). The innovation first appeared during Alexander’s conquests in the fourth century BCE; Aristotle attributes it to Carthage. The quadrireme’s size also allowed for the mounting of catapults, adding a level of danger that smaller galleys lacked.
