Civilopedia entry[]

Consider France on the eve of its revolution. It was not a feudal monarchy; it was monarchical absolutism at its height. An absolute king governed a state from atop a vast bureaucratic apparatus. It was a would-be hegemony of Catholicism and tradition. Liberals sought to reform the state while moderate humanists, such as Lafayette, aspired to build a more honest monarchy. Meanwhile, radicals aimed to overturn the entire thing. From renaming the months, which were antiquated references to Latin, to abolishing the monarchy, to removing the church from its privileged position, radicals looked toward a future that would be devoid of the trappings of the past. In the Anglophone world, the writings of Thomas Paine and Mary Wollstonecraft emphasized a rational, secular break.

Elsewhere, radical ideas emerged in relative philosophical isolation (such as the Ikko-Ikki of the Sengoku era in Japan), focused on the more pressing issue of decolonization, or emerged after socialism replaced radicalism as the voice of the far left.
