Civilopedia entry[]

Radio allows for nearly instant communication across long distances and requires relatively little infrastructure – while lines had to be erected, earlier forms of communication, by comparison, involved sending physical messages/people across long distances. Heinrich Rudolf Hertz discovered the existence of radio waves – electromagnetic waves of extremely long wavelengths – in 1888, but several years of experimentation were needed before this technology came under broad use (largely thanks to Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi). Early radio signals were used in radiotelegraphy, employing quick bursts to transmit the same information traditionally carried over a telegraph. Imagine the coming revolution, as society would soon receive news in an instant, send messages to secret agents and explorers, and instantly issue orders to troops.

In 1906, Reginald Fessenden produced continuous broadcasts capable of transmitting speech. A scant three years later the first radio station was formed, and the format became popular through the course of the 20s and 30s. As Henri Lefebvre points out, radio allows mass media, capitalism, etc. to occupy our time and thoughts even when we are “doing nothing.”
