Civilopedia entry[]

Early railroads in America were built to serve the needs of both industry and transportation. In the first half of the 19th century, the movement of cargo and people relied heavily on rivers, canals, and horse-drawn vehicles. The first trains were pulled by horses, but the arrival of the steam locomotive in 1829 changed everything. Railroads were safer and less susceptible to seasonal weather conditions than naval freight transport; they were also faster, cheaper, and more comfortable for everyday travelers. From 1855 to 1871, the U.S. government sponsored land grants for companies to develop railways, and trains soon ran from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

On top of facilitating industrial growth across the nation, railroads sparked a massive industry of their own. The needs of track construction, engineering, and maintenance created thousands of jobs that equipped many with mechanical and technological training. As railroads pushed farther west, stations attracted populations to support their infrastructure, forming towns and cities that expedited urbanization.
