Range is a statistic of
Military Units with ranged attacks in Civilization VII and its expansions. It determines how far away a unit can attack.
Mechanics[]
A unit's
Range represents the maximum distance (in hexes) at which it can make a ranged attack against a target. A unit with 1
Range, for example, can attack only targets in adjacent hexes, whereas a unit with 2
Range can attack any target within 18 surrounding hexes.
The following type of units contain the
Range stat and can perform ranged attacks:
Additionally, some
Unique melee units, such as the Guarde Impériale, also possess the ability to perform ranged attacks and therefore have a
Range stat.
Ranged attack[]
Ranged attacks offer a major tactical advantage since the attacking unit remains safe from retaliation. Unlike melee combat, the defending unit or
District being attacked cannot strike back.
In addition to being within
Range, a target must also be within the attacker's direct line of Sight. This means that even if an enemy unit is visible and within
Range, certain obstacles or terrain features can still prevent the unit from performing a ranged attack.
A ranged attack will fail if the target is:
- Outside the unit's
Range. - Not within direct line of sight (typically obstructed by vegetation or mountains).
Or if the attacker is:
Some ranged units, like the Assault Gun, have a greater
Range than their
Sight. These units can attack targets that they cannot see by themselves, as long as the target is visible to other friendly sources — such as other units or borders. However, line of sight is still calculated from the attacker's tile, as if it could see the target. That means terrain and features between the attacker and the target can still block the shot, even if another unit is providing vision. As a result, their range bonus can only be fully utilized when paired with other units that provide visibility on distant targets.
