Civilopedia Entry[]

India is built on layer upon layer of fallen empires. Delhi alone contains one of the Pillars of Ashoka, the ruins of the Delhi Sultanate, and various traces of the Mughal Empire. These remnants display how the Hindu and Buddhist (and British) faiths have existed side-by-side, even if they were not always at peace with each other. At the heart of the Mughal Empire were the Red Fort and its Peacock Throne, from which the emperors ruled over one of the wealthiest and most productive civilizations of its time. The British occupied the Fort during the Raj, and it remained a constant source of anxiety, as the massive complex and its wealth was an ideal fortification for any seeking to seize power.

Built by Shah Jahan, of Taj Mahal fame, the fortress was commissioned in 1639 after Jahan moved from Agra to Delhi. It is a city in itself, containing the Pearl Mosque and associated baths, a market, an audience hall, and a stepwell. The fort remains the most recognizable image of Delhi – perhaps second to the Taj Mahal in all of Mughal India.
